TORONTO - Air Canada says one of its pilots is being investigated in Britain after a security agent at London's Heathrow Airport reported a "smell of alcohol".
Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah says the incident took place on April 16 shortly before flight AC851 to Calgary was about to take off.
Mah says the backup pilot, who the airline would not identify, had not been scheduled to fly and the plane was operated by the captain and the first officer as planned.
The investigation is ongoing and the individual "is being held out of service", Mah said in a telephone interview from Vancouver.
The airline is calling it "an extremely rare occurrence."
British media reported the incident on Monday.
