TRURO - Colchester County council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting small community rinks Thursday night.
The motion was passed in light of a new agreement between the Town of Truro and the Municipality of Colchester to build a regional civic centre. Some councillors expressed concern that a new rink might have a negative effect on the county's other rinks.
However, Colchester mayor Mike Smith was quick to point out that the county considers the civic centre and local rinks complementary to each other.
"We would not build a regional civic centre to jeopardize the operation of our rural rinks," said Smith.
It's hard to say exactly what kind of an impact another rink would have in the area, said Joel Dawe, general manager of the
Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex in Brookfield.
"There will no doubt be some impact on us. That being said, we're certainly not opposed to (a regional civic centre)."
