No live racing this month but simulcasts will continue

Tomorrow marks the first day of the traditional mid-winter break for live harness racing at Truro Raceway.
Action is set to resume on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
THIS WEEKEND AT THE RACEWAY
Although there will be no live action, the raceway remains open with simulcasting of both thoroughbred and harness racing from some of the finest tracks in North America.
This weekend features racing out of Woodbine, Flamboro, Rideau and Windsor. Racegoers may have the opportunity to catch such Maritime connections as West Hants Warrior or Paul Gray's Hilo campaigning out of the Meadowlands.
ONES TO WATCH
Railbirds watching the daily training schedule at the track have no doubt been following the progress of many two-year-olds going through their paces.
Established as one of the leading teamsters in Atlantic Canada, Darren Crowe, the two-time defending Truro Raceway driving champion who shared the 2009 title with New Brunswick teamster Todd Trites, is also enjoying a reputation as one of the Maritime's most successful trainers and currently manages an 18-head operation.
Crowe is kicking off the colt season with nine "babies" in his lineup, including the two-year-old son of Apaches Fame, Emerson Seelster, purchased out of the Forest City Sale in London, Ont. in October by Hardy Mills Stable of Beaver Bank and the Lakeview GLB Stable.
Two impressive fillies in the Crowe string include Exclusive Offer, the high-priced filly out of the Truro Select Yearling Sale bred by Andre Moeller of New Brunswick and purchased by Sandy Shearer of Brookfield, along with the home-bred daughter of Coasttocoast Yankee, Just Coasting Along, for Lee Blaikie and Donnie Smith of Truro.
AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH
With February being celebrated in the province as African Heritage Month, Truro Raceway recognizes the contributions made through the black community to local harness racing in its 135 years of operation.
Dating back to the late1950s and early '60s some racegoers will recall John Jewel, Jimmy Elms, James Fraser, Rayfield Parsons, Alfie Carter and Pearl Williams who are recognized as significant players in the sport as owners, trainers and/or drivers.
Today, Stan Gabriel is a regular figure on the Truro backstretch as owner of the nine-year-old pacer MG Batailleur.
The imposing talent of teamsters Kirk Parris and Shawn Dixon can be experienced on a weekly basis as the pair demonstrate their skill and ability; Dixon with his own stock as well as pickup rides while Parris is rated among Truro's top catch drivers getting the call between the wheels.
DOUG HARKNESS BENEFIT
Friends of Doug Harkness from both
the harness racing communities and the newspaper fraternity have joined forces to plan a benefit for the well-known editor of the harness racing periodical, Atlantic Post Calls.
Organizers are advising that an evening of entertainment combined with a silent and live auction is tentatively set for Feb. 27 at the legion hall in Amherst.
