TRURO – The Truro Bearcats ended the regular season with a bang Saturday night defeating the Yarmouth Mariners 5-1 in front of 835 fans at Colchester Legion Stadium.
With the win Truro finishes the season with a 30-18-1-3 record, good for second place in the Maurice Bent Division. The Mariners (28-21-1-3) are currently tied for third place with the Metro Marauders but have a game in hand to be played today at 2:30 p.m. in Dieppe against the last-place Commandoes.
Stephen Horyl and Brett Frazee led the Bearcats Saturday night with a goal and two assists each.
Jordan Mock added a goal and a helper while Travis Moore and Jordan Cox also found the back of the net.
Horyl and Cox each scored while killing a penalty.
Rookies Cal Gloade and Colin MacKinnon each picked up assists while Spencer Scott made 20 saves for the win.
Truro broke open a close game with three goals in the third period.
The victory also sealed the Young-Knickle award for Truro. The trophy goes to the team with the fewest goals against allowed during the regular season. Truro’s goaltending tandem of Scott and Kirk Rafuse allowed 128 goals, four better than Woodstock, which completes its regular season today against Campbellton.
Truro defeated Bridgewater 3-2 on Friday night behind goals from Gloade, Horyl and Dylan McGuigan. Rafuse recorded the win with 38 saves.
