TRURO – The Truro Bearcats scored early and often Saturday night in a return to the win column in Maritime Hockey League action.
Defenceman Sam Caldwell scored 3:36 into the first period and before the buzzer sounded to end the opening frame the Cats held a commanding 5-0 lead en route to a 10-1 blasting of the Dieppe Commandos in front of 510 fans at Colchester Legion Stadium.
Jordan Mock had a pair of goals and a pair of assists to lead the offense. Caldwell had a pair while singles went to Jordan Cox, Stephen Horyl, Andrew Clouthier, Travis Moore, Brett Frazee and Alex Dalley.
Kendall MacInnis and Jordan Burke each had three assists while Andrew Kennedy and Dakota Johnson each had a pair. Cox, Evan Watts and Stephen Walker all had singles.
Kirk Rafuse stopped 26 saves for the win while Alexandre St-Arnaud stopped 19 of the 24 shots he faced in the first period and was tagged with the loss. Brandon Thibeau replaced St-Arnaud to start the second period and stopped 16 of 21 shots.
Truro was 1-for-2 on the power play while Dieppe was 0-for-4.
The win improves Truro to 24-12-0-3 while Dieppe falls to 7-32-0-1. The Bearcats travel to Summerside on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest with the Western Capitals (26-11-1-2).
Truro lost 3-2 to the league-leading Woodstock Slammers (32-6-2-4) on Friday night in New Brunswick in front of 847 fans. It was the Bearcats' first loss in 2011 and first in eight games.
Doug Jessey scored the winner on the power play at 19:20 in the second period.
Horyl and Moore scored for the Bearcats while Watts had a pair of assists and singles went to Mock and Frazee.
Former Bearcat Alex Scola stopped 32 shots for the win while Spencer Scott was tagged with the loss despite making 24 saves.
Woodstock was 1-for-3 with the man advantage while Truro was 0-for-2 on the power play.
