TRURO – The Cobequid Cougars are in the NSSAF Football League’s Tier 2 final.
The Cougars earned a berth in the title game with a 43-20 win over the Auburn Drive Eagles Sunday on a snow covered CEC Field. Cobequid plays the winner of last night’s other semifinal between the Dartmouth Spartans and Cole Harbour Cavaliers. Results were not known at press time. A Dartmouth win would give them the right to host the final, while a Cole Harbour win would bring the game to Truro.
“We’re playing in late November,” Cougars head coach Jason Williams said Sunday. “Even though it’s not the tier we wanted we still are, so the guys were excited today.”
Jordan Lauther, Peter Millman and Tristan Jennings all spent time at running back with Lauther and Millman each scoring a pair of touchdowns. Jennings added another.
Rookie quarterback Gab Bagnell completed nine of his 19 passes for 62 yards and rushed for another nine yards.
Liam Fitzgerald led the defence with six tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery while Josh Turple made two interceptions.
“The offence executed quite well and the defence played tough and kept them shut out until half time,” Williams said.
Williams said the team’s offence has been working much better since moving Bagnell to quarterback, freeing former pivot Millman to play other positions.
“It’s been nice to have a balanced attack for the last few weeks.”
