Truro will soon be a little greener, thanks to a grant awarded to the Town of Truro by Conserve Nova Scotia.

Truro will receive $11,600 for bike racks and on-road bike lanes in the hope that local residents will choose a greener way of travelling around town.

TRURO - Truro will soon be a little greener, thanks to a grant awarded to the Town of Truro by Conserve Nova Scotia.

Truro will receive $11,600 for bike racks and on-road bike lanes in the hope that local residents will choose a greener way of travelling around town.

Parks and recreation director Doug MacKenzie said having bike lanes and racks around town will encourage residents to ride bicycles instead of using vehicles.

"People today certainly want to lead more active and healthy lifestyles," MacKenzie said. "And by accommodating that and making things safer and more convenient, hopefully that'll allow them to get more exercise."

A study concerning bicycle travel was done in the community and the results were recently announced.

"Clearly residents are telling people that if biking were more convenient and safer, they would choose that option more often," he said.

Through Conserve Nova Scotia's Green Mobility Grants program, towns, municipalities and community groups submitted applications for grants of up to $25,000 for community-based projects that encourage transportation efficiency.

Other municipalities to receive funding for green transportation projects include Annapolis County, Berwick, Cape Breton, Chéticamp and Springhill.

Under the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, Nova Scotia has established a target to have one of the cleanest and most sustainable environments in the world by 2020.
