Donnachie to represent Nova Scotia at national triples championship next summer

TRURO - Chris Donnachie added further proof to the adage it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Chris Donnachie's team from the Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club nabbed the provincial triples title during the weekend in Dartmouth. Members of the team are, from left, Jim Granville (lead), Donnachie (skip) and Dale Kidd (second) with Lawn Bowls Nova Scotia president Keith Finck.

After dropping their first game at the Nova Scotia triples lawn bowls championship during the weekend,

Donnachie and Cobequid teammates Jim Granville (lead) and Dale Kidd (second) rhymed off four straight wins to capture the provincial title in Dartmouth.

"It feels good," Donnachie, of Hilden, said of winning the provincial crown.

After losing their first game on Saturday, Donnachie and his mates won their final two games of the day to advance to Sunday's final against previously unbeaten Ed Yeazel of Dartmouth.

Needing to beat Yeazel twice, Donnachie took the first game 23-9 to set up a one-game showdown, which the Cobequid bowlers took 18-9. In both games, Donnachie rallied from a 9-2 deficit en route to victory.

"The main reason we won is that it was a strong team effort," said Donnachie. "The three of us, we played as a unit and we get along good together, so I think that was a key thing."

Making Donnachie's feat even more special is the fact that members of the team are relative newbies to the game. Donnachie started playing just last year, while Granville, of Truro, and Kidd, of Halifax, each have a couple of years experience under the belts.

Donnachie said his team entered the five-team provincial tournament for the experience of competing against top-level bowlers.

"There was nobody more surprised than us down there that we won, I'll tell you that," laughed Donnachie.

The Donnachie team will represent Nova Scotia at the Canadian championship next summer in Ontario.

"We're looking forward to that - going to the nationals," said Donnachie.
