Clare Matheson receives a pass during the Cougars 29-5 loss to the North Nova Gryphons in the NSSAF Northumberland regional final. The Cougars will still move on to the provincial championships, taking place in New Glasgow next weekend.
The Cougars could not overcome the North Nova Gryphons on Thursday night, falling 29-5 in the Northumberland regional championship game.
North Nova got off to a fast start, building a 24-0 lead midway through the first half, before adding another toward the end of the frame to lead 29-zip.
The Gryphons would hold steady at 29 points, and stave off the Cougars despite a try from Karen Hu midway through the second half. That would be all the offense the Cougars could muster.
It was a far cry from the Cougars squad that posted 66 points in a shutout routing of the Hants East Tigers in Tuesday’s semifinal game. However, the Cougars knew they would be in tough against the Gryphons squad that has been stiff competition all season. After Tuesday’s game, head coach Dan Mosley was adamant his squad would need to be even better than its 66-point performance to beat the Gryphons.
“I think the score-line flatters our team," he said after Tuesday’s game. "The girls have played better, and they'll need to play a lot better on Thursday if we want to do very well against North Nova."
The Gryphons were led in scoring by Caroline Staub, who posted a try, penalty kick and three conversions. Keeley MacCuish had two tries while Lindsay Feit added a single try.
Both teams will now turn their attention to the NSSAF championships being held at North Nova. With the Gryphons as the host school, a second team from the Northumberland region was allowed to qualify. With the Cougars and Gryphons in opposite divisions, CEC could get a chance for redemption in the crossover playoff format.
The tournament will get underway on June 6.
