Truro Golf Club opening programs to non-members for first time

TRURO – Young aspiring golfers looking to hone their skills have two new programs to help do so.

Elite Junior members at the Truro Golf Club are seen working through some pushups as part of the fitness aspect of the program. Pictured from left are: Sam Roy, Connor MacKay, Ryan Power, Hayden Roy, Seth Faulkner, Hayden Kolke, Owen Mullen and Daniel Mackenzie.

The Truro Golf Club is offering two new junior programs this season, both for members or non-members.

“The golf club has been open for 111 years now, and in the past, the programs had only been available to members,” said Craig Dale, an assistant pro at the golf club who will be leading the junior programs. “Now, non-members can participate in the junior programs. It’s about growing the game more. We’re trying to expand that.”

The programs are open to ages 10 through 18, whether competitive or recreational.

“What we’ve tried to do is make golf more like other sports in town,” said Dale, adding golf is now considered a sport rather than an activity. “With golf, we’re now trying to get away from calling them ‘clinics’ and instead, we’re calling them practices.”

The elite program, which is already underway with eight members, features practices twice a week, as well as a fitness class.

“We really want to promote a healthy lifestyle and exercise, all while playing golf,” said the pro. “The elite program will be for those youth that want to compete, that want to be going to tournaments. We’re here to help them play their best golf at that time.”

Along with the elite program, the golf club is also featuring a recreational program, which starts the first part of June.

“Practices will be offered once a week for those that are wanting to work on their skills or to get their feet wet, and who want to play the game and have fun.”

There are currently 10 juniors signed up for the recreational program, with room for more.

Dale was asked to create and lead the two junior programs. He’s represented the province on a junior level, and has worked and trained at a junior academy in Florida.

The fee for the elite program is $249 for members and $399 for non-members. The recreational program is open to members for a $49 fee, and non-members for $199.
