TRURO – A new-to-the-region sport is being introduced throughout the county this month – pickleball
A cross between tennis and table tennis, the pickleball is played on a court like tennis and features lightweight paddles and balls.
It’s been gaining popularity across the province since being featured during the Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games held in the Truro area last fall. It will also be featured during senior games, happening this week in the area.
But, it’s not just for seniors – people of all ages are invited to give it a try.
Brendon Smithson, recreation director for the Village of Bible Hill, thinks people will really enjoy pickleball as a sport.
“The sounds, the action, the fun…you couldn’t ask for a more enjoyable game,” he said in a news release.
“If someone is looking for something new to do that is low impact, fun and has a wacky name like pickleball, then this is the perfect sport to pick up.”
Organizers of the 2013 Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games have invested some of the profits from the games into purchasing pickleball equipment and will host free introductory lessons in several areas of the county. Instruction will be provided.
The pickleball project also received financial support from Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness Active Living Branch.
Interested residents of all ages are invited to attend any or all of the following opportunities to try pickleball:
- May 6, 6:30-8 p.m. – Harmony Heights Elementary School, Salmon River
- May 7, 6-7:30 p.m. – Winding River Consolidated School, Stewiacke
