TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars were forced from the weekend's provincial high school girls hockey championship early.
The Cougars came up on the short end of a goals-for and against tiebreaker with the C.P. Allen Cheetahs and Lockview Dragons. All three squads held 2-1 records after the round-robin.
It is the first time the Cougars have missed the podium at provincials since 2010-11, when they won the title.
The Cougars qualified for the event in spite of going through a rebuilding season after losing 10 seniors a year ago.
The Cougars nipped Lockview 2-1 in their final game, a contest they needed to win by four goals to win the tiebreaker. Michelle James and Jamie Forsyth scored for Cobequid.
The Cougars blanked the Riverview Royals 3-0 in their second game with James, Kayla McNutt and Cassidy Reid doing the scoring.
Cobequid opened the event with a 5-0 loss to the Cheetahs.
