Truro's Mike Hennessy delivers a stone during Sunday's final at the Maritime firefighters curling championship at Truro Curling Club. Hennessy throws second stones for Dave Williams's team, which defeated Derrick Harty from Westphal/Cole Harbour 6-5 to take the title.
Truro’s Dave Williams defeated reigning champion Derrick Harty of Westphal/Cole Harbour 6-5 in the championship final, while Eureka’s Bob Matheson topped Salmon River’s Bill Spinney for the A Division crown and Tom Peters of Summerside got past Gordie Campbell, also of Summerside, to capture the B Division.
The Williams team also included Mike Hennessy, Randy Crowell, Randy MacPhee and Joy Galloway-Jones.
The three-day event, co-hosted by Salmon River and Bible Hill fire brigades, featured 20 teams for a weekend of competition and camaraderie.
“This tournament has been very well run. I haven’t had a complaint all weekend,” Roger Gouchie, referee-in-chief of the Maritime Firefighters Association, said Sunday morning.
“There’s been a really good turnout and certainly the two departments (Salmon River and Bible Hill) have done really well. They deserve credit because they’ve done an excellent job.”
Salmon River’s Dwyane Green, who co-chaired the event with Bible Hill’s Dwane Mellish, said he couldn’t be happier with the success of the bonspiel.
“It went well … they all seemed to have a good time. We put on a great meal at the fire hall, Truro Curling Club done a fine job with the ice, and Salmon River and Bible Hill really did a great job with the event.”
In addition to curling, the event included a washer toss tournament at the Salmon River fire hall on Friday.
“It went over well,” said Green. “We never tried anything like that before and the boys all stuck around for it and they had a great time. It went over pretty well so I’m hoping it’s something they’ll keep doing.”
Next year’s event will be held in P.E.I.
