Cougars fall to Gryphons in regional hockey final

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars will need to win a qualifier against the Memorial Marauders from Sydney Mines to earn a berth at the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation boys hockey championship.

The Cougars dropped a 4-2 decision to the North Nova Gryphons on Thursday in the deciding game of a best-of-three Northumberland region championship series.

Bradley Gallant and Austin Wheeler scored for the Cougars and Kylar Frank had an assist. The Gryphons led 3-2 late in the contest and sealed it with an empty netter, as the Cougars pulled goaltender Sebastien Gibson for an extra attacker.

The Cougars meet Memorial in Game 1 of their best-of-three series on March 16 in North Sydney. Game 2 is March 17 in Truro at 4 p.m. and Game 3 is March 18 in Truro at 3 p.m.

The winner of the series will advance to the provincial championship March 21 to 23, hosted by Sir John A Macdonald.
