TRURO - Truro natives Peter Millman and Kayla Gallagher nabbed gold medals on the weekend at the Canada West Track and Field Championships at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Both competing for the Lethbridge Pronghorns and coached by Olympic coach Larry Steinke, Gallagher claimed gold and broke a Nova Scotia record in the women's weight throw with an 18.48m toss.
Millman, who entered the meet ranked first in weight and second in shot put, had two personal best and provincial record-setting performances to win both events. His 16.91m shot put result topped his previous best by 50cm while his 18.82m weight throw effot was an 81cm personal best.
Both athletes, named the Cobequid Cougars' athletes of the year in 2012, have advanced to the CIS Championships in Edmonton March 6 to 8.
Millman was also presented with the Can-West Male Field Athlete of the Year Award.
Truro native Montana Forsyth, also attending Lethbridge, competed in women's weight throw on the weekend and finished out of the final with a 13.07m result.
