HALIFAX - Truro's Peter Burgess opens his bid for a Nova Scotia Tankard title today at Halifax Curling Club.

Peter Burgess

The 41-year-old skip, joined by brothers Craig (mate) and Todd (lead) and Jared Bent, take on Mayflower's Tom Sullivan in today's 1 p.m. draw. Burgess then meets five-time Tankard champ Mark Dacey, of Mayflower, at 6 p.m. Jim Burgess, father to Peter, Craig and Todd, joins the group as coach.

Sullivan served as mate to Dacey last year and helped eliminate Burgess in the Tankard quarter-final at Truro Curling Club.

The five-day event sees the eight teams play a round-robin before playoffs begin on Saturday. The final is slated for Sunday.

On the line at the five-day event is a trip to the Brier March 1 to 9 in Kamloops, B.C.

Also looking to represent the province in Kamloops are Mayflower's Mark Kehoe, John Luckhurst and Chad Stevens, Lakeshore's Jamie Murphy, the 2012 champ, and Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc, who was mate on Paul Flemming's title-winning foursome a year ago in Truro.
