BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Elks were nipped 5-4 in overtime by the Valley Maple Leafs Tuesday in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.
David Hayes potted the winner 3:41 into the extra frame at Don Henderson memorial Sportsplex to lift Valley (16-8-1-0) into sole possession of second place in the Fred Fox Division, just one point behind the Sackville Blazers (17-7-0-0) and one ahead of the East Hants Penguins (15-5-1-1).
The Elks (5-18-3-2) are last among six teams. Brookfield is on an eight-game losing streak dating back to Nov. 29 when they nipped the Leafs 3-2 in a shootout. Tuesday’s overtime decision was the third extra-time contest in four meetings between the two sides this season.
Jake Bowers, Mitchell Scott, Jordan Mont and Matthew Canning did the scoring for Brookfield while Lucas Dawe collected three assists. Kinnon MacMillan made 33 saves in the crease.
Mark Swain, Brandon Parker, Steven Brooker and Mitchell Singer scored in regulation for Valley, which got 35 saves from Joe Hines.
The Elks are back in action Saturday when they visit Port Hawkesbury to take on the Strait Pirates (11-11-0-2) at 7:30 p.m.
