TRURO – Zach Sill got his first taste of fighting in the NHL Monday night.
The 25-year-old Birch Hill native took on Corey Tropp as Sill’s Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Tropp’s Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.
Sill, a six-foot, 202-pound centre dropped the gloves with Tropp, a six-foot, 189-pound right winger, 3:01 into the third period.
Sill also recorded a pair of hits, took a shot on goal and won 33 per cent of his faceoffs in 10:22 of ice time. He finished the night at -1.
Sill, a former member of the Truro Bearcats who helped lead the club to a junior A league title in 2007, has been with Pittsburgh since Nov. 16 after getting called up from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Sill has been a member of the AHL squad for the past five seasons and has four points (1G, 3A) in 13 games this year.
He signed a one-year, two-way deal with Pittsburgh in July worth US$550,000 at the NHL level.
