TRURO - The Ecole Acadienne de Truro boys volleyball team recently made history.

The squad captured the school's first regional boys volleyball title on their home floor with a 2-0 (25-17, 25-16) victory over Ecole de Carrefour in the final.

"It feels really good," coach Guy Desgagne said. "It's really good because it shows our kids they can compete at a high level even though we're a small school and you don't have to go to CEC or elsewhere to be competitive."

The victory means the boys will be competing for the school's first Division 3 provincial boys title Dec. 6 and 7 at South Colchester Academy.

They'll be joined in gunning for a provincial title by the Ecole Acadienne de Truro girls team, which took their second consecutive regional title in Antigonish with a 2-1 (25-16, 21-25, 15-11) win over the South Colchester Wolves. Both Ecole Acadienne and South Colchester advance to provincials by virtue of the region being awarded two places at the tournament, which will be held Dec. 6 and 7 in Clare.

The boys edged Canso 2-1 (22-25, 25-16, 15-7) in their crossover match after sweeping to straight sets victories over South Colchester (25-18, 25-19), Ecole du Carrefour (25-21, 25-16) and Canso (25-19, 25-12).

"We just played together," Desgagne said. "We're a well rounded team. We can attack and have good defence and most of the other teams had a weakness we could key on."

The coach added he felt his team deserved to win the title and earn a place to battle for provincial supremacy.

"The guys have worked really hard and they were prepared mentally," Desgagne said.

For the girls, the regional banner came after sweeping through the round robin portion of the event with straight sets victories over the host East Antigonish (25-8, 25-3), Ecole du Carrefour (25-21, 25-11) and South Colchester (25-9, 25-13).

The Wolves also advance by virtue of the region being awarded two places at the provincial championship.
