Cobequid claims Northumberland Division 1 and 2 girls volleyball crowns
TRURO - Both Cobequid Cougars girls volleyball teams will be vying for provincial titles again this season.
The Cougars Division 1 and 2 squads laid claim to Northumberland region banners on the weekend in Antigonish, booking themselves spots in their respective provincial championship tournaments Dec. 6 and 7 in Sydney. Both Cougars teams were undefeated in their respective regional round-robin events.
"It's a relief really," Cougars Team #1 head coach Bob Piers said. "Otherwise you have to play in qualifiers this coming weekend and anything can happen then so by winning regional you go directly to provincials and you have two weeks to get ready."
The Cougars #1 squad defeated the host Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 17-25, 25-20) to clinch the banner after dropping the North Nova Gryphons 3-0 (25-3, 25-9, 25-12).
The title caps a run of six tournament wins in nine events this season for the Cougars.
Megan MacIsaac was a huge factor for the Cougars, collecting nine kills against her former Royals in the final match while also reeling off five consecutive successful serves to close the final set.
Cobequid's second division team, made up mostly of Grade 10 players, swept the Northumberland Nighthawks 2-0 (25-16, 25-14) to wrap up their bid for the title. The Cougars also beat the Hants East Tigers 2-0 (25-16, 25-14) after opening with a 2-0 win over Dr. John Hugh Gillis #2 (25-5, 25-9).
Piers credited the Division 1 squad's depth for cruising to the regional title so handily.
"We have a lot of depth and it makes a difference," Piers said. "Looking at the Gillis match, they had two girls who could really attack the ball and we had five, so it makes quite a difference."
Cobequid's development squad played with the top team in all of the top tournaments this season against Division 1 competition. The experience is serving the team well now Piers said.
"They got to play really tough competition all year," he said. "It's made a big difference for them."
Maddie Bernard and Rachel VanGestel were also big for the development squad, collecting several kills while also playing solid on serve receive.
