Bearcats look to steady the boat

Gerry Hale

A weekend split for the Truro Bearcats didn’t tell the whole story.

Friday, the Bearcats faced a big, strong Miramichi Timberwolves team. They expected a good test, and that’s what they got. The Bearcats were creating their chances but couldn’t make a significant dent in Miramichi’s last line of defence. It’s not fair to say Timberwolves goaltender Clint Windsor stole the game but he was spectacular, especially when he needed to be.

At the end of the day, Miramichi got the job done in the final period. While the results were not what the Bearcats wanted, there can’t be much complaint about the effort.

Saturday, the Bearcats faced a team they should beat, and they did. It was an interesting game, which showed if you take your foot off the pedal things can happen. The Lumberjacks are a young team and will require patience. For much of the game they skated hard and played with purpose.

The Bearcats now have their first dozen games under their belt. The first six were strong outings with contributions from all areas. The last six reeked of inconsistency. Some nights effort might come under scrutiny; other nights, it might be failure to tend to the finer details.

A Sunday morning practice may help to fine tune, or, tune up, the Bearcats engine. Apparently all cylinders aren’t functioning at the same time.

Truro came into the week sitting in third place in the MHL’s Eastlink Division. They will get the chance to challenge those ahead of them in due course.

In the meantime, the Bearcats must take care of business against this week’s opponents, the Valley Wildcats and the Summerside Capitals. Friday, Truro travels to Kentville to face a confident group of Wildcats. They’re playing well and, at this early stage, sit a single point behind the Bearcats in the division.

Saturday, the Bearcats are at home

at 7 p.m. to face the visiting Summerside Capitals. They were off to a slow start but as they clear up their inconsistency, they will be a challenge.

Each game has its demands and the Bearcats must deal with them one at a time.
