Robert Joe will be inducted into the Colchester County Sports Hall of Fame next month.

Beginning in 1962 and spanning 42 years, Robert Joe's local and international sports career included football, baseball, hockey and track and field and took him to locations such as Hong Kong, Tampa Bay, Montreal, Vancouver and all across the Maritimes.

In baseball, Robert played in the Victoria Park Little League, continuing with Truro Minor Baseball from 1963 to 1965 and then on to the Truro Men's Slo-Pitch League from 1983 to 2004.

Robert competed in football, beginning with the Truro Minor Football League from 1962 to 1966, played high school football and moved on to play for the Dalhousie Tigers in 1973.

He played hockey, starting at Victoria Street Elementary School in 1963, then continuing on to the Truro Minor Hockey Association, first at the bantam level in 1964, then midget in 1965-66, moving up to the rep team later that season. That team made it to the provincial playdowns.

In 1967, Robert was a member of the Truro Senior High Headmasters and from 1967 to 1969 (again making it to the provincial finals), competed with the Truro Junior Bearcats, winning the APC league in 1968 and playing in the all-star game in 1969. While at Dalhousie, he played on the JV team that won the Cape Breton University International Tournament and was named to the all-star team.

Robert went on to play in the Truro Commercial Hockey League from 1982 to 1985, playing for Main Brace, which won the league championship in 1982 and 1984, and was also a member of the Truro Cougars and Truro Flames in the Oldtimers Hockey League, winning various division titles from 1986 to 1995.

From 1967 to 1969, Robert also carved out impressive results in track and field, setting a record for javelin at the provincial headmasters championships in 1967, winning senior boys hurdles in 1969 and coming second in javelin the same year.

In 1969, he was a member of the Truro Senior High School team which travelled to Mount Allison for the Maritime high school invitational, where he won the triple jump.

Robert also competed in the Antigonish Highland Games in 1969, winning both the junior boys javelin and triple jump. From 1968 to 1969, he was also a member of the Truro Legion Track Team.

Quiet and shy by nature, Robert carved out a sporting career and passed his work ethic and dedication to the sports he played down to his two daughters, Cindy and Robyn, who have followed in his footsteps.
