TRURO – A former member of the Truro Bearcats will be wearing a letter on his New York Islanders sweater this season.
Andrew MacDonald, a Judique, N.S., native, was named an alternate captain of the Islanders by the team Wednesday.
The 27-year-old defenceman skated with the Bearcats in 2003-04 and 2004-05.
The six-foot-one, 196-pounder was selected by the Islanders in the sixth round, 160th overall in the 2006 NHL draft.
He recorded three goals and nine assists in 48 games for the Islanders in last year’s lockout-shortened season. MacDonald, who typically eats up big minutes on the blueline, joins Kyle Okposo in the alternate captain’s role. Jon Tavares retains his role as team captain.
