TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat the North Nova Gryphons 11-6 in their high school boys baseball season opener on Monday.
Colton Beach swatted three hits for the Cougars, while Kurtis Turner added a pair of singles and Matt Hingley stroked an RBI double at Albion Field under wet conditions.
Sam Byers was the winning pitcher, as he threw four strong innings with relief coming from Cameron MacKenzie, Chris Richards and Beach.
The Cougars scored one run in the first, three in the third and plated three more in the fourth for a comfy 7-0 cushion. The Gryphons, however, closed the gap with four in the bottom of the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to make it a one-run game, before Cobequid put it away in the top half of the seventh.
The Cougars play their home opener Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bible Hill Rec Park against North Nova.
