CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Marc Campbell guided Escape the News to a track record of 1:50:04 Saturday night to win the 54th Gold Cup and Saucer Race at Charlottetown Driving Park.
The previous mark was 1:51 set by Eighteen in last year’s edition of the race. It also matched Rare Jewel and Tigerama's Canadian record for aged pacers on a half-mile track.
The $60,0000 Gold Cup and Saucer win is the biggest to date for Campbell, who is one of Atlantic Canada’s top drivers and leads all drivers at Charlottetown this season.
Ron Burke trains the horse, as well as the runner-up finisher Hillbilly Hanover, who had Gilles Barrieau driving. R Caan, with Jason Ryan in the bike, rounded out the top three.
It was the seventh win in 14 starts this year for Escape the News, topping $139,000 in earnings for the season and $571,000 lifetime for owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, JJK Stables and Howard Taylor.
