BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Elks were shut out of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League awards on Tuesday.
In fact, eight other teams in the 11-team league were also blanked in that department, as the Glace Bay Miners and Pictou County Scotians combined to win every award.
Brandon Verge of the Scotians was league MVP. Verge was the top scorer in the regular season with 36 goals and 62 points in 32 games.
Other award winners were Brett Simmons, Glace Bay (best defenceman), Jake McKendry, Glace Bay (top goalie), Brad MacEachern, Pictou County (top rookie), Lucas Eshelman, Pictou County (most gentleman), Kent Verbeski, Glace Bay (coach of the year) and Glace Bay Miners (executive of the year).
The Elks resume their playoff series on Thursday when they host the Sackville Blazers for Game 4 of their Fred Fox Division final series. Brookfield leads the best-of-seven affair 2-1.
In the Sid Rowe Division final series, Glace Bay visits the Strait Pirates for Game 3 on Friday in Port Hawkesbury. The series is tied at a game apiece.
