RIMOUSKI – A pair of wins in their final three games wasn’t enough for the Rimouski Oceanic to beat the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to the top of the QMJHL’s East Division.
The Oceanic, captained by 20-year-old Beaver Brook native Casey Babineau, defeated the Gatineau Olympiques 2-1 and the Shawinigan Cataractes 9-4, but dropped a 5-3 decision Sunday to the Quebec Remparts.
The results left the Oceanic (41-18-3-6) two points shy of the Drakkar (44-19-2-3), who defeated the Victoriaville Tigres 4-3 Friday and the Drummondville Voltigeurs 5-4 Saturday to finish their schedule.
The Drakkar capped the schedule on a 7-3 run while Rimouski went 4-5-1-0 in their final 10 games.
Rimouski, which finished fourth overall on the 16-team circuit, will meet Gatineau in the opening round of the President’s Cup playoffs. Game 1 is Friday in Rimouski.
Babineau, a five-foot-11, 185-pound defenceman, finishes the season with 15 points (4G, 11A) in 60 games.
