TRURO - The Truro Pye Chev Bearcats are peewee AAA provincial champions.
And they did it in style with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Dartmouth Whalers in the final at Sackville Arena. The win punched the Bearcats' ticket to the Atlantic championships March 22 to 24 in Corner Brook, NL.
Jared MacIsaac was named the provincial tournament's top defenceman, while Alec MacDonald nabbed the top goaltender honour. Paired with Seth Slater, the duo allowed just seven goals over six games.
Gavin Hart won the puck-handling portion of the tournament's skills competition.
The Bearcats made the final with a 5-0 beating of the Acadia Axemen in the semifinal.
The Bearcats finished the round-robin with a 2-0 loss to the Whalers after doubling the Cape Breton West Eagles 4-2. Truro also nipped the Sackville Flyers 3-2 and opened the event with a 2-0 win over the Halifax Hawks.
