NEW GLASGOW – It wasn't the start they wanted, but the final result of the Pictou County Crushers game against the Bridgewater Lumberjacks on Monday was.

Pictou County won 5-3 in Bridgewater to open of their best-of-three mini-series heading into Game 2 Wednesday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The winner meets the Truro Bearcats, who finished atop the MH’s EastLink Division, Saturday in the best-of-seven division semifinal.

The Lumberjacks came out of the gate flying with Shawn Boudreau scoring 14 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Shaun McEachern and Luc Ramey added two more for the Lumberjacks to build a 3-0 cushion by the first intermission.

In the second period the Crushers bounced back with three of their own from Mitchell Shewfelt, Cody Squires and Nick Parker to tie the contest.

The Crushers pulled ahead 3:46 into the final frame on Squires’ second goal before Devan Gunn sealed the win with 1:06 remaining.

Brandon Thibeau picked up the win with 29 saves, while Billy Clarke turned aside 35 in the loss.
