TRURO – Truro Saints RFC teams were held off the top of the podium over the weekend at the 37th annual Indoor Sevens Rugby Tournament at MacMillan Show Centre.
The Saints were nipped 3-2 by Red Deer in the Men’s A Division final Sunday, while the men’s B and women’s A and B squads were knocked out in earlier play.
But none of the Saints teams left the three-day event, which attracted more than 1,000 each day and featured 68 teams from across the country in 99 games, with their heads hanging.
“We obviously felt we did really well this year to get to the final,” men’s A team member Bruce Casey said. “So we’re happy with our performance overall, but it would have been nice to get the win for sure.”
The team defeated Enfield, Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s earlier in the weekend to earn a trip to the final.
The men’s B team took an early exit after 4-1 and 3-1 losses to Kings and saint Mary’s respectively.
In women’s play, the A squad, which fell 6-1 to Halifax in last year’s final, was eliminated in a 3-1 Sunday by St. Francis Xavier in semifinal play after beating Guelph and Dalhousie.
In women’s B action, the Saints were edged 4-3 by P.E.I. in the consolation final after wins over Ottawa, Dalhousie and Sherbrooke.
Men’s A team member Andrew Russell said the strong results show the calibre of talent the Saints can boast.
“I think our club is more than competitive with any other club out there,” he said.
