TRURO – A late-game collapse left the Cobequid Cougars winless at the NSSAF Division 1 girls basketball championship Saturday at CEC Gymnasium.
The Cougars, ranked No. 4, dropped a 58-56 decision to the No. 6 Riverview Royals to finish eighth out of eight at the tournament with an 0-3 record.
Holding a three-point lead with 15.8 seconds remaining, Becky Hanna drained a three-point shot to tie the game and Allison Keough made a pair of free throws with 2.7 seconds left to put the Royals in front.
Brooke Densmore led the Cougars with 18 points while Brittany MacKay collected 12. Madison Munro put up eight points.
The Citadel Phoenix won the title with a 74-62 victory over the Lockview Dragons in the final. Memorial high took home bronze.
Division 1 Boys
In boys action at Memorial in Sydney Mines, the Cougars finished sixth with a 1-2 record.
Cobequid was defeated 96-74 by the Citadel Phoenix in a game for fifth place after the Cougars beat the hosts 74-53. Cobequid opened the event with an 80-67 loss to the Prince Andrew Panthers.
The Auburn Drive Eagles claimed the banner with an 81-76 victory over the Dartmouth Spartans in the final.
Division 3 Boys
At the Division 3 event in Annapolis Royal, the South Colchester Wolves posted a 1-2 record for a seventh-place finish.
The Wolves, competing in their first provincial championship, topped Strait Area in their final game after suffering falling 66-58 to Carrefour and 71-48 to the Hants North Flames.
