TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars' quest for a provincial high school girls basketball title was dashed on Thursday.
The Cougars dropped a 78-55 decision to Halifax Grammar Gryphons in their opening game at the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 1 hoops tournament at CEC Gymnasium.
The Cougars meet C.P. Allen today at 2 p.m.
Jane McLaughlin poured in a game-high 29 points for the Gryphons, while Erin MacNeil added 16 and Kathleen McDonald had eight.
Brooke Densmore scored a team-high 19 points for CEC and Brittany MacKay added 10.
Halifax Grammar led 34-27 at halftime.

Jayla Verney knocked down three three-pointers and scored a game-high 15 points, as the No. 1-ranked Phoenix downed the Cheetahs.

Megan Thompson led all scorers with 32 points, including four three-pointers, as the No. 3 Panthers cruised to victory.
