REGINA – Peter Millman’s outstanding rookie season in university track and field hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The 18-year-old Truro resident and member of the Lethbridge Pronghorns was named Canada West rookie of the year on the weekend as the conference wrapped up its indoor season at the Canada West track and field championships at the University of Regina.
Millman, a multiple record holder in Nova Scotia, won the 35-pound weight throw with a 16.88m effort at the two-day event, completing a perfect season in the discipline. He also qualified for the CIS championships March 7 to 9 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Millman also claimed silver in the shot put and was named a conference all-star along with fellow Truro native and former Lions and Cougars teammate Kayla Gallagher.
Gallagher, who also attends Lethbridge, won the 20-pound weight throw with a personal best 16.85m, a CIS female rookie record. The win also qualified her for the CIS championships.
Gallagher, who has also had a fine season, was an honourable mention for Canada West rookie of the year and female field athlete of the year. Gallagher also nabbed silver in shot put with a 12.94m throw.
