TRURO – What a sendoff.
The Truro Bearcats won their final game at Colchester Legion Stadium in dramatic fashion Saturday as Zach Evans-Renaud scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the home side a 3-2 victory in front of 1,102 fans.
Evans-Renaud’s tally whipped the crowd into a frenzy which exploded when Truro goaltender Shayne Campbell stopped Jared Hicks to seal the victory for the Bearcats.
The win pulled the Bearcats (33-9-0-5) to within a point of the Mariners (34-8-2-2) for top spot in the EastLink Division.
The third-place Amherst Ramblers (31-10-4-2) trail Truro by three points.
Nobody in the house could have predicted the game would end as it did. The Bearcats came flying out of the gate and into a 2-0 lead just five minutes after the opening faceoff thanks to tallies from Kyle Morrison (1:24) and Grant West (4:56).
But the Mariners didn’t roll over and knotted the contest by 3:12 of the second frame on goals from Brandon Bussey and Braden Mercier.
Yarmouth carried that momentum into the third and put the Bearcats on the ropes late in the game with a 5-on-3 powerplay.
But Campbell stood tall in the crease and the Bearcats blocked the shooting lanes to hold the Mariners at bay.
