Keith MacKenzie, president of the Bearcats junior A hockey team, said the first game will be played in the Community Credit Union Arena at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre on March 2.
“We are cautiously elated,” said MacKenzie. “We had been given so many opening dates, but this one seems to be solid.”
The Bearcats’ first game on the new ice surface will be against the Metro Shipbuilders with a game time of 7 p.m.
“In anticipation of our first home game in the new centre, there will be no fee charged, but donations will be accepted in support of the Rotary House for the Colchester Community Workshop,” the president said. “We’re hoping for a big crowd and I think everyone wants to see the new centre.”
With this weekend’s home games still being played at the Colchester Legion Stadium, MacKenzie said the players are excited for the move.
“We had a meeting with the players and they toured their new dressing room and the centre, so they’re anxious to get in there,” he said.
Along with the Bearcats’ game on March 2, they’ll host the Yarmouth Mariners on March 3 at 2 p.m.
The game against the Woodstock Slammers which was postponed on Feb. 9 has been rescheduled for March 8 at 7 p.m. – the final day of the regular season.
The Bearcats currently sit in second place in the Eastlink Division, only two points behind the Yarmouth Mariners. Truro has already clinched a playoff spot.
