AMHERST - Truro's Peter Burgess opened the Nova Scotia provincial men's curling qualifier with a victory yesterday.
The Burgess foursome, which includes third Craig Burgess, second Jared Bent and lead Todd Burgess, doubled Mayflower's Rob Harris 8-4.
Burgess trailed 2-1 after three ends, but took the lead for good by scoring three in the fourth. Clinging to a 4-3 lead after six ends, Burgess counted two in the seventh, surrendered a single in the eighth, before putting it out of reach with a deuce in the ninth. Truro's Cameron MacKenzie throws second stones for Harris.
The top five teams following this weekend's qualifying tournament will advance to the provincial Tankard Feb. 5 to 10 in Truro.
Also on Thursday, Mayflower's Steve Ogden defeated Mayflower's Ian Juurlink 10-4. Ogden's foursome includes Stewaicke's James Barr at lead and Truro's Peter Neily at second.
Scott Saunders' unaffiliated foursome includes Truro native and third Bruce Lohnes. Saunders played his first game Thursday against Dartmouth's Kevin Saccary (result not available at press time).
