TRURO – Not quite how the Truro Bearcats wanted to start 2013.
The Bearcats (21-6-0-3) are winless in the new year after dropping both weekend contests on the Maritime Junior Hockey League circuit. Truro dropped a 6-4 decision to the Summerside Western Capitals (26-6-2-0) Sunday in Summerside after falling 3-1 to the Woodstock Slammers (18-11-2-0) Saturday on home ice.
The results leave the Bearcats second in the EastLink Division with 45 points, losing ground to the first-place Yarmouth Mariners (25-5-1-0), who have 51 points on a pair of weekend wins.
Sunday’s setback came in spite of a late-game charge from the Bearcats who got goals from Kyle Morrison, Tyler Morrison and Philip Fife in the final 10 minutes.
David Mosher notched the other Bearcats tally mid-way through the second frame. Shayne Campbell was tagged with the loss in a 30-save performance in front of the crowd of 1,317 at Credit Union Place.
Christopher Caissy, Justin Rasmussen and Mitchell Maynard spotted the Capitals a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes and never looked back, stretching the cushion to four by 7:30 of the second period. After Mosher made it 4-1, Colton Parsons restored the four-goal lead at 9:55. Maynard used his second goal of the game at 5:39 of the final stanza to make it 6-1 Summerside.
Jacob Riley made 36 saves in the Summerside crease.
Daniel Perigo scored the lone Truro goal Saturday with help from Jeff Hanes in front of 601 fans at Colchester Legion Stadium. Campbell stopped 16 shots.
Simon-Pier Chamberland made 33 stops in the Woodstock net and got support from Ryan Purvis, EJ Faust and Ian Lewis.
