Junior B Elks dump first-place Pirates

BROOKFIELD - The Brookfield Elks dumped the Strait Pirates 4-2 Tuesday in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The result leaves the Elks with a 4-5-0-0 record, last in the six-team Fred Fox Division. The Pirates (8-2-0-0) remain tied atop the Sid Rowe Division with the Glace Bay Miners (8-2-0-0) at 16 points apiece.

Connor Baker buried a pair of goals in front of the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex crowd, while Shane Piercey and James Shapleigh also scored. Spencer Scott walked away with the win.

Americo Pino and Marc Bourgeois countered for the Pirates. Luke Jessup was tagged with the loss.

Read's hat trick lifts Truro to women's hockey victory

TRURO - Meghan Read's hat trick was all the Truro Wynn Park Wildcats needed to top the Rams 3-1 recently in the A Division of the Nova Scotia Women's Hockey League.

Cheryl Hamilton chipped in a pair of assists, while Holly Dean and Monique Gallant added singles. Mallory Harris was the winning goaltender.

Two out of three ain't bad for midget A Bearcats

TRURO - The Truro Crescent Cab Bearcats took two of three recent midget A hockey contests.

The Bearcats fell 5-3 to Western Valley after taking an 8-6 win over the same squad. The Bearcats also downed the Brookfield Elks 3-1.

Jacob Dillon, Matthew Gray and Brandon Bolger did the scoring for Truro in the second game against Western Valley while Taylor Daigle had a pair of assists. Nathan Hurlburt made 30 saves.

In Game 1, Darren Canton paced Truro with a hat trick while Quinn Fullerton and Daigle each netted two goals. Quinten Gloade buried the other marker. Coleman Porter and Fullerton each added a pair of assists and Keigan Thorpe posted the victory.

Hurlburt was the winning netminder against Brookfield and got goal support from Ethan Hume, Fullerton and Canton. Fullerton also added an assist.

Wendy's Bearcats win pair of games over Pictou County

TRURO - The Truro Wendy's Bearcats came out on top of both of their recent bantam A hockey contests with the Pictou County Crushers.

The Bearcats finished the set with a 6-2 win after opening with a 7-2 victory.

Parker Gilby scored a pair of Truro's goals in Game 2 while Cody Smith, Justin Ferguson, Kurtlyn Rushton and Hayden Boutilier potted single tallies. Cole Dodsworth collected three assists and Hayden Roy added two. Rushton, Boutilier and Ferguson chipped in single tallies.

In Game 1, Ferguson and Boutilier each netted a pair of goals while Gavyn Carter, Tyler Dunlevy and Dodsworth rounded out the scoring. Chance Sylliboy, Gilby and Rushton each had a pair of helpers and Dodsworth had one.

Junior pleasure skating registration taking place

TRURO - The Truro Junior Pleasure Skating Club is holding a second round of registration for the fall and winter season.

Registration sessions will be held today, Sunday and Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Colchester Legion Stadium. The cost is $55.

The club is for children under 11 years old and is supervised. The child must be able to stand on their skates and get around the rink without assistance.
