TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars are off to the NSSAF Division 1 boys soccer championship for just the fourth time in the school's history.
The Cougars boys punched their ticket to the final four with a 4-1 victory over the Citadel Phoenix in their qualifying match at CEC Field while the girls squad was nipped 1-0 by the Riverview Reds in Sydney.
Josiah McNutt and Ben Gorringe each scored twice for the Cougars, who move on to provincials next weekend at Park View high school in Brigewater. Cobequid will be joined by the host Panthers, the Riverview Reds and Halifax West Warriors.
Tim Trites was the winning keeper.
The Cougars needed to win just one qualifying match after taking the Northumberland Region title last week in a 5-1 aggregate win over the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals.
The girls are missing out on provincials for the first time in three seasons. The team was forced to win a pair of qualifying matches to get back to the championship after falling 2-1 to the Royals in their regional final.
Cobequid edged the Lockview Dragons 1-0 in their first qualifier Thursday.
