KENNETCOOK - The Cobequid Cougars have earned a berth at the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation baseball championship.

The first-year Cougars punched their ticket to provincial tournament by finishing second at the Northumberland region championship this past weekend.

A 5-3 win over the Hants North Flames in a semifinal game secured a berth at provincials, hosted next weekend by regional champion North Nova Gryphons.

In the regional final, CEC made seven errors during the first two innings and nine overall in an 8-6 loss to the Gryphons.

Nic Morrow stroked three hits and drove in three runs for the Cougars, while Sam Byers doubled and Matt Mingo and Colton Beach singled.

Sam Byers, in relief of Cameron MacKenzie, suffered the loss.

In the semifinal victory over Hants North, Beach doubled, tripled and drove in three runs, while Morrow and Kurtis Turner singled.

Byers was the winning pitcher and Mingo earned the save. Mingo struck out three straight batters to end the game after the Flames loaded the bases with no outs and a run already in.
