TRURO - The Truro Bearcats erased an early-two goal deficit to double the Sherwood, P.E.I. Falcons 8-4 in final of the minor midget AAA Early Bird Invitational Hockey Tournament on Sunday.
The win capped an undefeated weekend for the Bearcats, who posted a 4-0-1 record.
Connor Lynds scored two goals in the championship game, while Jaeger Dean, Lucas Gulliver, Colby Starratt, Ian O'Brien, Kenny MacInnes and Brendan Turner each added single markers.
Matt MacCallum stopped 15 shots for the win.
The Bearcats earned a spot in the final after a 6-3 victory over the East Hants Penguins in a semifinal game.
Gulliver notched a hat trick, while Ben Lynds, Greg Harris and Nate Leger fired singles. Goaltender Brandon Archibald faced 15 shots.
In preliminary play, the Bearcats defeated two-time defending tournament champion Mid-Isle Matrix from P.E.I. 1-0, East Hants 5-1 and played to a scoreless tie against Cole Harbour
Neil Smith netted the lone goal against Mid-Isle and MacCallum stopped 17 shots for the shutout.
In the win over East Hants, Smith pumped in a hat trick, while Tristan Clark and MacInnes had other goals and Archibald picked up the win in nets.
