TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars battled to a bronze-medal finish at the annual Dalhousie Scotia Bank High School boys volleyball tournament during the weekend.
The Cougars defeated Queen Elizabeth from St. John's, N.L.
25-23, 21-25, 15-5 in the third-place game.
The Cougars went undefeated in preliminary play, defeating Three Oaks (Summerside) 25-15, 25-11; CP Allen (Bedford) 25-11, 25-19; and Parkview (Bridgewater) 25-11, 25-16.
In the quarterfinals, CEC defeated St. Joseph's (Renfrew, Ont.) 25-15, 26-24. In the semifinal, archrival Horton defeated CEC 25-20, 18-25, 15-11.
Leading the Cougars was Grade 11 leftside Josh Roberts, who turned in a season-high 76 per cent serve-receive efficiency, including 15 perfect passes to go along with 97 per cent serving with six aces.
Grade 12 leftside Christian Cameron added 32 digs and 12 perfect passes, while Grade 11 middle Riley Tanner led the team with 11 stuff blocks and 19 block assists and a 96 per cent serving performance.
The Cougars had significant contributions from backup libero Eric Roy (12 perfect passes) and Grade 10 leftside Josh Dorey (six ace serves), helping the team to their third consecutive top-three finish in as many tournaments.
Next up for the team is the annual Wall of Fame Cup tournament in Charlottetown.
