KENNETCOOK - The Cobequid Cougars have earned a semifinal berth at the Northumberland region high school boys baseball championship.
The Cougars will meet either Amherst or Hants North today at 10 a.m. for the right to play in the regional final this afternoon.
Cobequid posted a 1-1 record on Friday to finish in a three-way tie for first place with North Nova Gryphons and Northumberland Nighthawks. The Cougars and Gryphons advanced based on fewer runs against.
Cobequid opened with a 6-4 loss to Northumberland. Kurtis Turner, Nic Morrow, Jordan McCallum, Cameron MacKenzie and Dustin Yuill had hits for CEC in the contest. Lucas Naugle was the losing pitcher.
In a 3-1 victory over North Nova, Turner belted a solo home run, while Morrow added a two-run single. Matt Mingo, Colton Beach, Kenny MacInnes and Yuill also singled. Beach tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the win.
