TRURO - The CEC boys volleyball team captured gold at the annual Horton Invitational last weekend.
The Cougars defeated the host Griffins 25-18, 25-22 in the final.
Cobequid went undefeated and never lost a single set at the tournament. The Cougars posted wins over Avonview (25-8, 25-15), Halifax West (25-13, 25-18), West Kings (25-14, 25-9), Horton #2 (25-6, 25-11), and Sackville (25-17, 25-14) in the semifinals.
CEC's consistent results were triggered by a team high 70 per cent serve-receive efficiency (Josh Roberts had 21 perfect passes), coupled with strong team serving (Harrison Callaghan was 93 per cent serving, including 10 aces).
The Cougars stellar play was buoyed by contributions from middles Zach Bernard (two stuff blocks, 13 kills) and Riley Tanner (two stuff blocks, 15 kills) as well as Christian Cameron (16 perfect passes, five defensive digs, and nine kills) and Grade 10 Josh Dorey with 10 ace serves.
Team captain Adam Sandeson stepped up this weekend after an injury to starter Ben Chisholm, with a 70 per cent serve-receive efficiency, and 44 kills throughout the tournament.
Eric Roy stepped in as libero with steady play and Arjen Blaauwendraat had his best serving performance to date.
The Cougars will compete in the annual Dalhousie high school tournament this weekend in Halifax.
