TRURO – Steve Henderson is a champion once again.
The 55-year-old East Mountain resident and crew chief for Enfield’s Shawn Turple helped the driver to his second Maritime Pro Stock Tour championship in four seasons Saturday at Scotia Speedworld.
Turple finished fourth in the season finale Dartmouth Dodge 200 to nip Halifax’s John Flemming by 11 points in the driver’s standings. Flemming, who came into the event trailing Turple by 27 points, did all he could to snatch the title by winning, leading the most laps and qualifying on the pole for the event. Turple had to finish ninth or better in that case.
Turple and Henderson were together for the team’s last title in 2009.
Mike MacKenzie, of Montague Gold Mines, held the lead late in the race until he was passed by Flemming with six laps to go, relegating him to a second-place finish. Montague. P.E.I.’s Jonathan Hicken was third and Shawn Tucker, of Fredericton, rounded out the top five.
