TRURO – The NSAC Rams will not compete in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball championship next month in their own gym.

The announcement was made late Sunday night in an email by NSAC Athletic Director Judy Smith following a meeting between herself and the team after the Rams lost 80-51 to the Holland Hurricanes to end their regular season.

The setback left the Rams seventh in the eight-team conference with a 2-19 record.

Smith cited the tough season as a decisive factor.

“Based on our league results, we have not shown that we will be able to compete at the level required of a participant in a National Championship,” the email said.

The vacant spot at the event, which is slated for March 15 to 17, will be filled by the ACAA runner-up. The ACAA championship will be held March 2 to 4 at Holland College.

How is this a cowardly move? The mens team was not competitive during the regular season 2-19 in the ACAA which is arguably the weakest in the CCAA. Do you think it would be fair to let the school, community or players be embarrassed by the best teams in Canada? The Rams would not stand a chance against competition like that if they cannot compete in the current league. With that being said, the Rams played with grit and heart all season but in order to compete at this level they need a few more talented players. This is in no way an example of poor sportsmanship, if anything it shows class and understanding.

Sorry i will have to disagree with you. Playing would have showed grit and class. You don't need to stand a chance to just play the game to the best of ones ability. These guys are pretty young so I don't really blame them.. its the department head that needs to step up here. You do not really want to set the president that if something is hard you should not bother trying. Hey if you know you don't stand a chance what do you have to loose by playing? Local fans would appreciate seeing them "show up and give their best"

Thank you "Knowledge." Showing up and doing their best is what league play is for and that has been what the Rams have been doing for years. That doesn't mean they should be sharing the stage with the best basketball teams in the country just because they hosting the event. How about this... the Rams start throwing some cash to their Coach Simmonds for his efforts (coaching and recruiting). He has a pipeline to an area that produces the most basketball talent in NS. Develop a team worthy of competing on a National stage and then the fans will come out and watch them "show up and do their best". There is no reason that the NSAC Rams couldn't duplicate what the Mount has done over the last few years (dominate locally with solid recruiting) both in the ACAA and CCAA. Seriously Stephen you haven't answered my question to you. Do you (or your son) start or come off the bench for the Rams? You are obviously too closely attached to the team to be calling Judy Smith a coward for perhaps one of her wisest decisions.

Second time they have done this. Judy you should not allow this to happen as it is just an example of poor sportsmanship. So what if you loose, its a game and it shows respect for your community and school. With all do respect its a very cowardly move.

Cowardly? You are kidding me right? I think the AC has gained respect amongst those who understand that this is a National competition not a church fundraiser. The AC has hosted the Nationals many times because of their facilities and tournament organizing skills not their basketball skills. Basketball fans want the best 8 teams possible playing not watching an "uncowardly" team get waxed by 40pts 3 times over. I think more people respect the move than don't. Do you start or come off the bench for the Rams?
