Hitters to crush golf balls at long drive qualifier

TRURO - A berth in the world finals and a shot at $500,000 is on the line this weekend at the Atlantic Canadian Remax Long Drive Championship at Marshland Golf Driving Range.

The three-day event, which gets underway Friday, is expected to attract about 100 competitors from across Canada. The top two earn a spot in the World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, NV., Oct. 27 to Nov. 5.

It is the first time a world qualifying event has been held in Atlantic Canada.

Qualifying and elimination rounds will be held Friday and Saturday and the field will be narrowed to the top 24 for Sunday.

The cost is $40 for six balls and anyone is welcome to enter.

There will also be a senior division for those 45 and older with the top hitter moving on to the world final.

This weekend's event will also feature a $50,000 hole-in-one shootout where golfers can take a shot at a pin 150 yards away. The 20 shooters closest to the pin return Sunday at 4 p.m. to hit to a pin 160 yards away for a chance at the prize money. Entry is $20 for six balls.
