TRURO - It's a well-known fact the Truro Bearcats and Halifax Canadians aren't the best of friends.
But the Hubtown boys will be hoping the Canadians (17-9) beat the Kentville Wildcats (10-17) in their final Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League regular season contest tonight to give Truro a crack at the league's final playoff spot. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field in Kentville.
"We want a shot," said Bearcats coach James MacPherson.
Should Halifax win it will set up a one-game playoff between Truro (10-18) and Kentville for fourth place in the regular season and the final postseason berth. That would happen Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the TAAC Grounds, thanks to Truro winning the season series between the two sides 4-3.
But if Kentville wins tonight, Truro's season is over.
"I was talking with (Kentville coach) Ian (Lockhart) and we talked about how we've both won some big games to put ourselves in this spot," MacPherson said. "So it would sure be nice to play Wednesday night."
For those who think Halifax will lay back to do their rivals in, don't be so quick to judge. The Canadians would earn themselves a one-game playoff for first place against the Dartmouth Dry (19-8) Wednesday with a win over Kentville tonight.
MacPherson said it would be a shame if Truro's season ended without another chance to play, especially after beating Halifax and Dartmouth in the last two games to pull to within half a game of Kentville and force the possible showdown.
"It seems like we finally just came together and showed ourselves and the league what we're capable of. But we don't want to finish like that. We still have more to prove."
The Sydney Sooners (12-16) await the league's second-place finisher.
