Martell's favourite photos 2012

As editor of the Colchester Weekly News since May 2011, and a reporter with the Truro Daily News since 2002, I have been privileged to spend time with many people in the community. Each year offers new experiences and opportunities to capture the heartbeat of our local communities in both written word and images. The newspaper is invited to numerous events that showcase life in our community today, along with the lives of many incredible people who live here. Here are a few of my favourite moments captured in photos during 2012.

Harry Annis, left, of Tatamagouche, and his grandson Craig Hayman made a great discovery in 2012 when a piece of family history turned up in Bounty, Sask. 1 width:500px;height:332px The Bible Hill Village Preschool celebrated its 40th anniversary in May. 2 width:500px;height:332px In April, 15-month-old Lily Francis of Truro could barely contain her excitement as she ran through the hunting grounds at Victoria Park, which was filled with about 5,000 brightly coloured eggs to choose from. Truro’s Easter egg hunt has continued to grow each year, demonstrating the importance of public green spaces to host community events. SHERRY MARTELL - COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 3 height:500px;width:427px Every year in preparation for Oktoberfest weekend, storeowners in the village of Tatamagouche decorate to add to the festive Bavarian-themed occasion. Sharon MacKenna, a gallery and frame shop owner, grew some natural decorations. She stands at about five-feet two inches and a sunflower that grew outside her shop reached more than three times her height. SHERRY MARTELL – COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 4 height:500px;width:177px As a reporter and editor we often are the first to discover strange and unusual things to share with our readers. In September I met with Denmark resident Kevin Glenn who discovered a unique, six-foot tall corn stalk growing in a pile of fill near his garage. He was surprised to see the corn there because he didn’t plant it, but also that it had produced 14 ears of corn on the one stalk. SHERRY MARTELL – COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 5 height:500px;width:332px
Young Street resident Roberta MacConnell was busy digging in her flower beds one sunny morning in may when I dropped by. MacConnell, pulling deep-rooted wild buttercups and other weeds, offered some gardening tips while preparing the soil for spring planting. SHERRY MARTELL – COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 6 width:500px;height:332px Got Milk Farmers Cooperative Dairy milk tanker driver Ray Smith passed an impressive milestone on Feb. 9, marking four decades of working with the Salmon River dairy. It was a joy to interview Smith about his passion for work and long-time service. SHERRY MARTELL – COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 7 width:500px;height:332px Colchester County boasts a number of outstanding athletes including Luke Mosher, a member of the Truro Centurion Swim Club, who works on his butterfly stoke during a practice at the Centennial Pool in Truro. Mosher qualified for a national meet and served as an inspiration to others on his team. SHERRY MARTELL -COLCHESTER WEEKLY NEWS 8 width:500px;height:332px
