TRURO - Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann said she is lobbying her caucus colleagues to have a new provincial jail located in Truro.
Zann has spoken with Justice Minister Ross Landry about the new jail and told him Truro is the perfect location for the new 100-cell facility. She said Landry told her the community would be given "serious consideration."
She has also spoken with municipal and regional development officials about their proposal.
Zann said the government expects the site selection process to take three to four months.
Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Scott Armstrong said the jail must remain in Cumberland County. The previous Tory government had announced it would build a new jail in Springhill next to the federal prison.
The new NDP government reviewed the situation and decided it was a better financial decision to build one facility as opposed to one in Antigonish and one in Springhill.

Lots of space and services avaiable on the old military base that OTTAWA SHUT DOWN out here in Debert.
Maybe big-man Armstrong can return all that money we have lost in this county since Ottawa made the decision to close it 10-15 years ago.
Or the least he could do is find some federal stimulus money to pay for building a 100-bed facility in Debert.
If not, STFU since it's a provincial matter, not a federal one. You'd think that a newbie MP would figure out the differences pretty quickly. -

WTF!! A federal mp has no say in this very provincial matter--- has to stay in Cumberland county??? ,no Scott,Truro lost a jail when one central facility was built in FX,remember,the old facade is still there a stone's throw from Standfields. Springhill has a penitentiary ,figure out per capita jobs Cumberland count already gets,and compare that to Truro and it'd be a no-brainer,besides the fact that the services required are all here in Truro.

Brookfield should be site of new jail. Land availability, proximity to 102 and 104. Brookfield needs the infrastructure and economic boost. MP Armstrong, Mayor Taylor and MLA Burrill please push for this !!!

Come on people the jail will go to ol' Rossco Landry's riding, not going to be a surprise to me. The hint should of been when he said it was going to be between Truro and Antigonish, DUH!!!

Lenore has ZERO chance of securing this for us. She is not considered a player in Halifax and if she makes any more embarrassing speeches in the Legislature it's going to get worse.
